What is Ratrimaan?
The word "Ratrimaan" is derived from Sanskrit where “Ratri” means night and “Maan” means measurement or duration. It signifies the total time span of the night period, which complements the day period known as Dinmaan .
Since sunrise and sunset times vary based on location and season, the length of Ratrimaan also changes accordingly. It is longer in winters and shorter in summers in most locations.
How is Ratrimaan Calculated?
The formula for calculating Ratrimaan is:
Ratrimaan = Next Day's Sunrise – Current Day's Sunset
For example, if sunset occurs at 6:45 PM and the next day's sunrise is at 5:45 AM, then:
Ratrimaan = 5:45 AM – 6:45 PM = 11 hours
Use of Ratrimaan in Astrology
- Division into Horas: Like Dinmaan, Ratrimaan is also divided into 12 planetary hours or Horas, each ruled by a specific planet and influencing energy during that period.
- Muhurta Selection: For night-time events like marriage, travel, or rituals, astrologers consider favorable Horas within Ratrimaan.
